Otley Brass Band Musical Director - Will Rowson


Will Rowson

Will is a 19 year old trumpet, soprano cornet and flugelhorn player from Ilkley,West Yorkshire. Will began playing the trumpet at the age of 10 at school. At the same time he started playing piano, but he decided that he wanted to play something bigger so at the age of thirteen he stopped playing the piano and started playing organ, in the summer of 2010, he took his Grade eight organ in which he obtained a Merit. As well as learning to play the organ, Will carried on playing the trumpet. He quickly progressed through all four of the school orchestras. When he was eleven he joined Guiseley Brass Band and continued to play with them for four years. At the age of fifteen he joined Wharfe Brass, then Otley Brass Band and after a short stint on 3rd cornet, Will took up the position of Flugelhorn, until he eventually took up the Soprano cornet seat in the band. 

Will is now is a fully established prize winning brass band and wind band conductor, who conducts all over the country for world renowned musical ensembles. 

Will has played with the Elland Silver Band under the baton of the famous cornet player James Shepherd and horn virtuoso David Essex, as well as Flugelhorn for the Prize winning Elland Silver Youth Band with Samantha Harrison.


In September 2011, Will secured a place at Leeds College of Music where he is studying the trumpet, flugelhorn and soprano cornet in the Brass Ensemble under the direction and teaching of ex Grimethorpe Brass Band conductor John Anderson and world renowned pianist Marisa Davis. He enjoys Leeds College of Music immensely and hopes that the teaching he is receiving and the contacts in the musical world that he has gained help him to achieve the career that he wants to pursue.

Will has played in some of the greatest concert venues around the country, such as The Sage - Gateshead and Symphony Hall –Birminghamand his musical talent has seen him appear on 'The One Show', as well as in many National magazines. 

In his spare time, Will is a pit orchestra musician on piano and trumpet, also occasionally taking on the musical director’s role.

In late 2012, Will took up the soprano cornet seat in the prize winning York Railway Institute Band. He enjoys playing with some of the best musicians from around the country with this band. He hopes that one day he will play and conduct in some of the best bands and musical groups around the world.
